Ben F. Lee

1944 ∼ 2023

Ben F. Lee

Ben Lee was born in Beaumont, Texas, July 11, 1944, to Lydia Voyd Frank Lee and Benjamin Franklin Lee, who have both preceded him in death. Ben went to be with Jesus, holding hands with his family, October 18, 2023, at the age of 79 after complications from previous medical conditions added to covid.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2023, at First Baptist Church Beaumont. Officiating will be Dr. Christopher Moody and Reverend Jean Paul Osteen, both of First Baptist Church Beaumont. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont.

Visitation will be prior to the service at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2023, at First Baptist Church Beaumont.

Educated in BISD, he graduated from Beaumont High in 1962. He served during the Vietnam era in the United States Navy as a Communications Specialist for The Atlantic Fleet, stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, and thereafter in the Navy Reserves for several years. He graduated from Lamar University. In 1971, he married the love of his heart, Elizabeth Gardner, whom he met at his age five and her age three at First Baptist Church in Primary Children’s Care. They would celebrate 52 years of marriage in November 2023. To their union were born their younger son, Zane Gardner Lee, and his older brother, Aaron Kyrk Lee, who went to heaven in 1991.

A writer by profession, Ben was a Sports Columnist for both the Beaumont Enterprise and the Beaumont Journal for many years. He directed a Professional Writing Resumes service, became an investigator for insurance purposes, and then was a technical writer for PetroCon Engineering and J&J Manufacturing. He was an author of poetry, historical fiction, and a Bible-based series developed around Joseph of Arimathea, the uncle of Jesus Christ.

He was an avid member of the international history club SCA, a skilled armored sword fighter and rapier bladesman, as well as an artisan and servant/leader, being a highly awarded member in multiple areas. Known as “Sir Simonn of Amber Isle,” he and his “Dame Tessa Gardens” are legendary for 47 years of servant/leadership in the geographic area known as “Bordermarch, Ansteorra.”

Ben loved the fellowship of former youth whom he taught in Sunday School, his Adult Sunday School Department, and the Men’s Prayer group at First Baptist Church Beaumont, where he was a lifelong member.

He is survived by his cherished wife, Liz; their son, Zane and beloved, Brandy, of Beaumont with her children who call him PawPaw; a brother-in-law, Jack Gardner and wife Lily of Dallas and their sons, Joel and Matt, and their three grandchildren; his cousin, Gary Lee Dunn, and wife Debbie and family of Baytown; his cousin, Ron Smith of Houston; and an army of other relatives and friends.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bryan Smith, David Lathrop, Richard Parrish, Richard Nunn, Hank Clark, Ron Bentley, Conrad Kuehn, Doug Turnage, Todd Reamey, and Jonathon Lockwood. Honorary pallbearers are George Von Kanel and the Senior Adult Men of First Baptist Church Beaumont.

In lieu of floral arrangements, the family is suggesting those who wish, contribute to the First Baptist Church Beaumont Youth Ministry at 409-833-1426, 3739 N. Major Dr, Beaumont, Texas 77713.

I would like to share a sonnet I wrote about this dear man. I wrote this soon after we lost him. Simonn (Ben), you were a kind, welcoming, loving soul. I looked up to you, as did an entire kingdom. Alas, a hero’s to the heavens gone, And left a vacant space upon the earth. A kingdom’s mournful dole is lifted yon, That sings of noted chivalry and worth. As tales of honor’d deeds and fame, bespoke By those with equal scars and heavy hearts, Regard the tenderness he could provoke With kindly words, the greatest of his parts. Yet no one can escape this common fate, For every life must run its limit out. Then with remembrance we can sadness bate, And forth the measure of his greatness shout. While we shall ne’er be from his absence healed, Speak still his name, and let each soul be steeled. You will be missed, but never forgotten, brother. Now fly home and rest.

Thirty-eight years ago, Sir Simonn of Amber Isle (Ben) and Mistress Tessa of the Gardens (Liz) were the first peers and nobles I met in the SCA. They were ruling Baron and Baroness of Bordermarch at the time, and patrons of our little college shire in Graywood. We looked to them as the very definition of peerage, the epitome of grace and courtesy. My heart goes out to Tessa as she mourns the loss of Simonn, who went to his Maker. My heart goes out to Ansteorra. Our lone and wondrous star is dimmed. We have lost a quadruple peer, a founding baron, a ruler of both principality and kingdom, a champion of both fields, an artist, a leader, an inspiration, a Lion, and a friend. The world shall never see his like again.

When I was very new in the SCA, I asked someone, "So, how do you do this thing right?" Meaning, actually BE noble, chivalrous, courteous, etc. He pointed over at Ben (whom everyone called Sir Simonn) and said, "See that guy? Watch him. Do what he does." I've spent four decades trying to live up to his example. I'm a better man for the effort. In the SCA I've become known as a "bard" - a poet, singer, storyteller. So here is my tribute to Sir Simonn, in the style of Norse heroic verse. I wrote it originally when he was fighting cancer in 2014. It recalls an epic fight in the blazing summer of 1983 or '84, where Simonn passed up an easy win because he didn't think his opponent was set properly. I ran across it again today and added the last part. It seemed fitting. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1De42MhWS_5EPv8aov7v8g9B83gA8aTQ-FFKf8G-dcYU/edit?usp=sharing

I met Ben shortly after Liz. Ben was a gentle giant. He always had a loving, kind word of encouragement no matter my situation. He is missed.

So glad we were able to visit a few times over the last few years and Kobe and Avah both got to make memories with some of my favorite people in the whole world. Ben was a solid rock in my life and I loved him dearly. I was claimed as theirs a long time ago. I'm thankful for the Godly example he set and the influence he had on my dad's life and my own. So much love for Ben and Liz.

The world knew him as Ben F. Lee, but to me he was the wonderfully charismatic Count Sir Simonn. Along with Countess Tessa, they always made me feel like it was a homecoming every time I was graced to be in their company. Ben's mighty, larger-than-life presence touched my own life for 34 years like he did all around him. The world is a little less bright today but all those who knew him, those whose lives he touched, are better for it - I am better for it. Rest in Peace and go now to thy fathers' mighty company; take our love with you - we'll keep the memories with us. ~Cornelius of Blackmoor, mka, Cornell Thomas

To A Knight Dedicated to Sir Simon of the Amber Isles A knight tall and noble Sits atop his palfrey Watching as fighters In rank upon rank Step out to test the foe. For long years he did so Following those men Onto the great field But now he can only Watch as they head on Into the field of glory. We who are left behind Fueled by his flame Inspired by his teaching Know he watches us His pride in us is matched By our pride in his care For we who take up A weapon and step out On the field he trod upon. May we hold his spirit With us when we put on Armor and take the field. By Peter Holland aka Lord Svipdagr of Northumbria

Sincere condolences to the family. I am so very sorry for your loss. May God provide the necessary peace and comfort to your family and friends during this difficult time. Please remember these words of encouragement from the Bible: “ Jesus plainly told her: “I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.” —John 11:20-25.

Rev. Frank Hodges October 19, 2023
My heart goes out to Liz and Zane and the rest of the family. I met Ben a number of times when he would come to different events at Cathedral Christian School where Liz and I taught. It was understood, if Liz loved him, he was worthy of friendship and trust. Again, Liz, my heart breaks for you and Linda, Gina and I will be praying for you, Zane and the rest of the family during this difficult time. You are, and having always been, in my heart and thoughts since I left Cathedral School. God bless your sweet heart. Frank Hodges
