I first met Bernice in 2001. I was a seminarian and I was assigned to St. Francis of Assisi Church in Orange, for my internship from May until October. I had to select 12 lay parishoners to serve on the lay advisory committee whose responsibility is to offer feedback to the seminarian and evaluate the seminarian's liturgical, social and ministerial presence in the parish. I picked Bernice to serve on this committee and she was the chairperson of the group. Let me sum up how it worked out overall: in the end, the seminary used as a model the lay advisory committee of St. Francis parish for how a lay advisory committee should conduct themselves in carrying out their tasks in helping with a seminarian interning in their parish. The seminary director of pastoral field education was impressed with the committee. She was a special and gifted woman. I am grateful for what she did in supporting my vocation to the priesthood. May she rest in peace.

To the Hymes Family I send my deepest sympathy. Your mother was one of the nicest women I knew from my St. Mary's days. A beautiful, kind, caring lady whom I'll always remember. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time.##imported-begin##Regina Brown Dennis##imported-end##
