Dr. Peter Sims Erhard

Dr. Peter Sims Erhard passed away July 26, 2012 in Dallas Texas. He was born in Galveston, Texas on November 18, 1911. He was fortunate to have celebrated his 100th birthday in Beaumont this past November with many friends and family members. Dr. Erhard practiced medicine in Beaumont for over 39 years before retiring in 1987.

After graduating from the University of Texas in Austin in 1941, Dr. Erhard attended medical school in Galveston where he received his medical degree. He continued his internship at Hermann Hospital in Houston and did his residency there in Anesthesia. In 1943, Dr. Erhard entered the Army specialized training program. In 1945, he was appointed a First Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corp and then a Captain in 1947 and served at the Veteran's Hospital in Temple, Texas. After being honorably discharged in 1948, he became an instructor at Baylor College of Medicine in Anesthesia.

In 1948, Dr. Erhard moved to Beaumont where he practiced Anesthesia till he retired in 1987. He was a Diplomat on the American Board of Anesthesia, Fellow on American College of Anesthesia and member of the Society of Anesthesia. Dr. Erhard, an expert in his field, was very well respected in the medical field in this area and had staff privileges at all Beaumont hospitals. He really enjoyed his work, had lifelong friends in the medical field and community and has been admired by many.

Dr. Erhard was an active Mason, livelong Shrine member and active in the Beaumont Shrine Club. He was past board member of American Heart Association, on the advisory board of Beaumont Savings & Loan and Union State Bank, which later became Allied Bank.

He has survived many family members: first wife, Cora Pomeroy Erhard; son, William Bill Erhard; daughter, Sue Erhard Ketchem; grandson, Peter Erhard; granddaughter, Mandy Ehrhart; and numerous other relatives.

He has been married to Doris Erhard for over 21 years and they have shared their lives in both their home in Beaumont and their home in Dallas. He is survived by grandchildren, Marcus D. Ehrhart, Frank Erhard, Linda Erhard Decker, Shannon Erhard and Leslie Maxwell.

Dr. Erhard's service will be Thursday, August, 2, 2012 at 10:00am at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 4090 Delaware in Beaumont, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Pete was the first fully trained modern anesthesiologist to come to Beaumont. I came here in 1957 as an anesthesiologist joining Drs. Bill Darnell, Russ Bebeau and Cecil Glass.
