Eugene D. Wilson

1926 ∼ 2016

Eugene Davis Wilson, 89, of Beaumont, Texas passed away Tuesday March 29, 2016 at his home. Eugene was born on May 28, 1926 in Altus, Oklahoma to Walter Eugene Wilson and Ethyl Boswell Wilson.

Eugene spent most of his youth in Oklahoma. His father died when he was 10 years old at the height of the Great depression. Eugene got his first job at 13 driving a school bus.

After graduating from Fox high School he joined the Army-Air Corps in 1944 at age seventeen. He served his country in World War II as a Sergeant and gunner where he trained in Alexandria Louisiana to crew on a B-17 aircraft. At 19 he married Lois Brady who was 17.

After World War II he attended West Texas State University for undergraduate studies then moved to Dallas in 1950 to attended Southern Methodist University Law School on the Gl Bill, graduating with a law degree in 1953.

Eugene rose to the position of General Counsel for Lone Star Gas Utility Company, now Atmos Energy. After retiring from Lone Star, Eugene worked in software, banking as well as mergers and acquisitions.

In recent years he spent time with family and friends. He was an avid historian and loved to read. His library was immense, and a source of great pride. At any given time he would have three books going simultaneously. No time for television. Eugene was a genuine scholar and a gentleman in the truest since of the word.

He was preceded in death by his brother Jack Durwood Wilson aged 21 in 1953; and eldest son Dr. Mark A. Wilson in 2009. He is survived by former spouse Lois Wilson of Beaumont, Texas; son Gregory Wilson of Beaumont; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Chandra Wilson of Dallas; granddaughters Leslie and Lauren Wilson of Dallas; daughter-in- law LaNell Wilson of Beaumont and grandsons Dylan and Zachary Wilson of Beaumont. He is also survived by many wonderful friends and extended family. The family would like to thank Gentiva for the professional hospice care provided to Eugene and especially the individual care provided by his hospice nurse Megan.

Graveside service was such a fitting tribute to Eugene. The eulogy by friend, Royce, was what Eugene requested. He asked for four songs, beautifully performed a cappella. His grandsons, Dylan and Zach, were on hand to read the prayer requested. The Magnolia Cemetery was in full bloom and the wind was blowing. May he rest in peace by his son, Mark A. Wilson.

The first time I met Eugene was when Alden Moore died. We were at the hospital with Uncle Alden and Eugene had come to be with him also. Curtis and I had our two children with us and Eugene let us have his room at the hotel that night and he stayed with Aunt Madeline. We have talked quite a bit since about the family heritage. He sent me his writing about his life and information about my husbands family. My father in law was his cousin through Ethel Boswell and Lydia Boswell (sisters). Lydia was my father-in-laws mother. I'll miss those calls. A lot of our history died with Eugene. I appreciated all the stories he shared with me and am thankful for the privelege of knowing him.

Mr. Eugene came back into our lives about four months ago. He was at his home in the last stage Parkinson Disease. We had some real good discussions with him about his life, family, etc. We just fell in love with his intelligence, dry humor and charm. It was so sad to see him go. May God give strength to the family and all that are close to him. Royce and Rose Mathews
