Gene Patrick Settle

1941 ∼ 2015

Gene Patrick Settle of Beaumont, Texas died Tuesday December 29th 2015 at Bay Area Regional Medical Center in Webster Texas. He was born on March 18th 1941 to Bertha Mae Clubb Settle and Auber Pierson Settle at St Patrick’s Hospital in Lake Charles, La. He lived the majority of his life in Beaumont, Texas surrounded by a large family of Uncles, Aunts and Cousins.

There is a kind heart and pure soul that is gone from this world and our lives. He never met a stranger. He loved to talk and tell stories. He would help anyone in need and give you the last dollar from his pocket. His friends will remember him as a “Cool Dude”. He was first and foremost a Musician and Composer. He loved hunting, fishing, and golf. He also loved Crystal Beach. But most of all he loved his children and his family. He served in the Naval Reserve, December 10th 1963 – June 14th 1966. Gene was on Active Duty, June 15th 1966 – March 20th 1970. He was a Conductor and Instructor for the Naval Band. He studied Music at McNeese State College in Lake Charles, La and studied Business at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. He then joined the family business Surf Lease Equipment Rental.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home in Beaumont. There will be a Celebration of Life with food, family and friends after the Memorial Service at Brazos Cattle Company, 5055 Eastex Freeway Beaumont, TX 77706.

His wishes were that his ashes be taken to Crystal Beach and placed in the old sunken Whaler ship. There will be a ceremony this summer, details to be forthcoming.

He was preceded in death by his father, Auber Pierson Settle; mother Bertha Mae Clubb Faires; brother, Weldon James Settle; sister-in-law Marilyn Mary Settle, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins, to many to name but not any less important to him.

He was survived by his son, Christopher Wendell Settle; daughter-in-law, Mary Jean Settle; daughter, Robin Renne’ O’Neill; son, William Robert Settle; daughter, Shannon Elizabeth Dewitt; son-in-law, Lance Christopher Dewitt; niece, Michelle Alane Hoph and husband, Kurt James Hopf; grandchildren, Conner James Settle, Carlie Jean Settle, Chelsea Elizabeth Khan, Pierson Jesse Dewitt, Christa Elizabeth Dewitt; and his great -grandchild, Aryelah Jean Callahan. I have the fondest memories of Gene in high school and in the band. He was a "cool" guy, which needs no further explanation...Gene was one of the finest trumpet players I've ever heard. He could hit notes that would have made Harry James pay attention! I could never locate Gene or keep up with him in later years, but thought of him often. Just before Christmas, his cousin Jerry Wills emailed to see if I was in contact with Gene and we were unable to locate him. I wonder if he knew how well thought of he was and is...
