IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gerhard Georg
Shay
September 6, 1949 – December 3, 2025
It is with great fondness that we remember Gerhard Georg Shay, affectionately known as Gary, who left this world on December 3, 2025, in Beaumont, Texas, at the age of 76. Born on September 6, 1949, in East Berlin, Germany, Gary's journey led him to a life rich with love, adventure, and many cherished moments.
Gary had a fulfilling 25-year career as a Tank Station Process Operator for Cities Service (Citgo). Upon retiring from Citgo, he worked for Spindletop Center Intellectual and Disability Services for six years. After leaving Spindletop Center he was employed with the Texas Department of Transportation until he retired in 2016. During his employment career, he always brought his friendly outgoing personality and dedication to every task.
He was not just defined by his job; his vibrant personality shone through in all aspects of his life. He was a passionate drag racer in his youth and carried his love for cars throughout his life. His service as a mechanic in the Army spoke volumes of his skills and his unwavering support for his country.
An audiophile at heart, Gary had an eclectic taste in music, with a special affection for The Beatles. You could often find him enjoying the sounds of his meticulously set-up home stereo system. Photography was another passion of his, as he loved capturing moments through his lens. Gary was a true conversationalist who could connect with anyone he met; he had a knack for making people feel at ease. An animal lover through and through, he never met a dog he didn't adore—or did not adore him; especially his loyal companion, Lola.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Karan Shay, his son Peter Shay and his wife Keri, son Christoper Shay, daughter Megan Kern, her husband Chris and daughter-in-law, Kathleen “Becky” Shay. Gary is also the proud grandfather of five amazing grandchildren, Michael Shay, Brian Shay, Samantha Shay, Peter Shay and Christopher Kern. He shared a special bond with his brother, Jimmy Shay and his wife Alice, his sister-in –law, Mary Elff and her husband Walter and brother-in-law John Stohl.
He joins in rest his parents, George and Inga Shay, and his beloved in-laws, John and Betty Stohl.
Friends and loved ones can pay their respects during the visitation on December 11, 2025, from 4 PM to 5 PM, followed by a memorial service at 5 PM, both hosted at LaBrie Claybar Funeral Home located at 1155 N 11th St, Beaumont, TX.
In honoring Gary's memory, let us cherish the laughter, the conversations, and the beautiful moments shared. He lived his life to the fullest and embraced everything he loved with open arms. Until we meet again, Gary.
