Gussie Leona Burnett

Gussie L. Burnett, 93, of Beaumont passed away, Monday, May 24, 2010 at her home.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 27, 2010, 10:00 a.m.at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Chapel with Reverend Brenda Warren of First Christian Church in Beaumont officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Burnett was born April 23, 1917, to W.J. and Florence Moats in Shawnee Oklahoma. She was the seventh of eleven children. Upon graduating from high school, she moved to Beaumont where she met and married Leon L. Burnett. She retired in 1978 after working many years for Dr. John Travis and Dr. J.A. Henderson. The main pleasure of her life was her family. She was a long time member of Washington Blvd Christian Church and, more recently, a member of First Christian Church where she enjoyed many of the church activities, especially playing cards.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon L. Burnett, and her son, Jerry M. Burnett.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Joan Purkey and husband, Jim, and Marilyn Westbrook, both of Beaumont; granddaughters, Jeri Gentry and husband, Mark, of Spring, Julie Purkey of Houston and Kimberly Foote of Groves; great granddaughter, Lauren Gentry of Houston; great-great granddaughter, Madison Gentry of Houston and brother, H.R. Moats of Stillwater, OK.
