Dr. J. Dennis Black

1946 ∼ 2015

J. Dennis Black, M.D. died on June 15th, 2015 in Beaumont, Texas. Dr. Black was born on December 24th,1946 in Rosebud, Texas to his parents, Jack and Norine, and was raised in Port Lavaca. He practiced as an OB/GYN in Beaumont for 33 years before retiring in 2010.

He is survived by his wife Nancy; son Darron and his wife, Hang; son Michael and his wife, Lisa; and three grandsons, William, Nathaniel and Kai.

In between delivering countless thousands of babies, surgeries, and terrorizing nurses, Dennis was a talented woodworker, Elvis impersonator, and avid outdoorsman who considered nature to be his church.

Through his straight talk, advocacy for quality of patient care, loyal friendship, and relentless humor, he has found a place in the hearts of many.

Services will be held Friday, June 19th at 2pm at Claybar Funeral Home on 11th street. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 – 7 pm also at Claybar Funeral Home.

I met Dr Black when I started working on 3 South. I was terrified of him at first, because he didn't like new nurses. But in time, I grew to appreciate his sense of humor and really saw a caring side of him. Rest in Peace Dr Black, you will be missed!

Nancy, Dennis helped shape my early years of nursing. Life in L&D was certainly never dull when working with him. His sense of humor would always surface at just the right time. Those years are some of my favorite memories. You and your family are in my prayers.

Growing up across the street from Dennis, we became best friends. We fished and hunted a lot together. We had lots of good times. His mother and father were like my second mom and Dad. He will be missed. Mike Riley

Dennis Black was a man of many talents and qualities. A highly respected and skilled physician and surgeon, a master wood craftsman, an avid sportsman, a story teller, a prankster, a husband, a dad, a grandpa and a friend to so many. And he was my friend too. We all have so many stories and great memories with Dennis tucked inside of them. I wish I could tell him thank you one more time for being there for me, not as a doctor or as a golfing buddy, but as my friend when I needed one most. He had a heart of gold hidden behind that constant grin. Like all the rest; I'm going to miss that smile. God bless you my friend.... Mike Brown

Seldom do you find a person as interesting as Dr. Black. He had a few rough edges but a core of gold. His primary focus in life involved his family and the care of his patients. He maintained a high degree of compassion despite long hours of work and the stress that went with his profession. He played equally hard and had a love of life that was contagious. I feel fortunate to have had him as a large part of my life. I have loads of fond memories of our time together. He was a friend like no other. Rest in peace Dennis. Someday, may we meet again.
