Jeffrey Rogers Martin

After a long illness, Jeffrey Rogers Martin’s suffering came to an end December 23, 2025. He was 57 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at First United Methodist Church Beaumont. Officiating will be Dr. Frank Alegria. Burial will follow at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Beaumont, Texas.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, December 29, 2025, at LaBrie Claybar Funeral Home in Beaumont, Texas

Jeff attended Hardin-Jefferson schools and Lamar University. He was an enthusiastic team player, a compassionate nurse, a ready volunteer, and a devoted family man. He and his beloved wife Melissa were married for almost 34 years. While they spent months in hospitals and ICU, their “healthy” times were adventurous and joyous, filled with travel and family experiences. Their son Chris and daughter Hannah were the pride of their lives as they followed every playing field, church and NJROTC activity as they grew and became outstanding adults.

As a member of First United Methodist Church in Beaumont, Jeff served on committees, fried oysters, built ramps for Habitat for Humanity and beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Jeff’s mom said that even as a kid, he would argue with a rock. This skill was put to good use in assisting and judging in UIL debate, which he was passionate about. Surprisingly though, his knowledge and compassion were evident in his nursing career. Patients and students in his classes appreciated his abilities and sincere concern. He said that being on both sides of needles and tubes let him empathize with the “victims.” Family members definitely benefited from his counsel. Jeff was a handy man and a very present help in trouble. Hurricanes and floods inflicted terrible damage which required hands-on help, and he was always there.

Jeff was predeceased by his grandparents Ray and Marion Rogers of McAllen, TX; his father Raymond Martin of Orange; an infant brother, as well as cousins.

He is survived by his devoted wife Melissa Allen Martin of Beaumont; son USN CPO Christopher Martin and his wife Ania Duhaime Martin, of Chesapeake, VA; daughter Hannah Marie Martin and her fiancé Jarren Mahon of Beaumont; mother Marilyn Rogers Martin of Orange; sister Suzie Simmons of Orange; sister Leslie Burch and her husband Mark, of Orange; and niece Alyssa Kelley and her wife Isabella.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Menard, Mark Burch, Jarren Mahon, Rick Carruth, Chuck Pierce, and Christopher Mayfield. Honorary pallbearers are Ty Hancock, John Woods, and Kyle Taylor.

“I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.”

Jeff was such a special person and I’ll forever be grateful for him. My life wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for his help when I was in high school debate. He made his mark on me and so many other people, and we’ll all carry him through the rest of our lives.

Where do I even begin, for more than 10 years Jeff and I traveled Texas judging debate. We spent so many weekends together all across the state it's hard to think of it as something that ended. We conducted so many workshops together and his influence on an entire generation of students will never be forgotten. So many grew and developed into who they were with his guidance, encouragement, and sometimes frustration. Rest while my friend you will be missed.

To the family of Jeff Martin, As the former debate sponsor at Nederland High School, I wanted to share just how much Jeff meant to our debate program, and to me personally. Jeff served our team in so many roles over the years. He was a judge, a mentor, and a coach to countless students in CX, LD, and Congressional Debate. Under his guidance, our program grew in both skill and confidence. The students learned not only how to debate, but how to think critically, speak with clarity, and believe in themselves. Because of Jeff’s teaching and dedication, our team advanced to regionals and state year after year. What many may not have seen was the time and heart Jeff gave behind the scenes. He drove out early mornings, stayed late after school, and gave up countless weekends during UIL season to judge and work with our students. To his family, thank you for sharing him with us. I know there were many weekends when he was away from home, and that sacrifice was never taken for granted. When Jeff first approached me about starting a Congressional Debate program, I was hesitant. It was something I knew very little about. But Jeff, along with Jan Morris, helped build that program from the ground up. That first year, and many years afterward, we had state qualifiers. Those students went on to become confident communicators and thoughtful, capable leaders. These are skills they carried far beyond the debate room. I also came to know Jeff as a person. He spoke often and proudly of his children and of his wife, Melissa. While I didn’t have the chance to meet his wife or son, I did meet Hannah, who graciously drove him out several times so he could continue working with our students, even when he wasn’t feeling well enough to drive himself. That meant more to me than I can adequately express. I noticed. I knew he was making an effort, even when it was hard. That was simply the kind of person Jeff was. I have shared this news with former students, and many have responded with heartfelt condolences and memories. He meant so much to all of us. Jeff didn’t just help build a debate program, he built people. He will be remembered always, and his family will remain in my prayers.
