Funeral services for Jerry, Newman, 74, of Beaumont, will be held on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, between the 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Mr. Newman was born March 31, 1934 in Pennington, TX to King and Vivian Newman and passed away on May 27, 2008, in Beaumont, TX.

He will be remembered by many as a professor at Lamar University for 42 years where he was named a Professor Emeritus and honored as a Regent's Professor. After graduating in 1951 from Regan High School in Houston, TX, he continued his education by earning his B.F.A. in art from the University of Texas, Austin and his M.F. A. in painting from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He did postgraduate work at Church College of Hawaii, Stephen F. Austin State University, and the University of North Texas.

Mr. Newman also taught courses in Santa Fe, NM, Kerrville, TX, Cozumel, Mexico, Rome, Italy, London, England, and Paris, France.

Some of his honors include: Texas State Artist 1981-1982; Texas Wildflower Artist 1982-1983; Texas Ducks Unlimited Artist 2001-2002; Jerry A. Newman Painting Scholarship established in 1997 by former students and friends; and numerous one person and group exhibitions.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 36 years, Pattee Newman; son, Bob Whynot of Beaumont and daughter Lisa Whynot Huey and husband Richard of Houston; brother, Bobby Newman and wife, Anne of Houston; and nephews, Bobby King Newman and Bryan Newman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lamar University, referencing the Jerry Newman Painting Scholarship, Lamar University, PO Box 10011, Beaumont, TX 77710 or to Harbor Hospice, 2450 Major Dr, Beaumont, TX 77713.

I will always remember what an amazing teacher that he was. There are some that go the extra mile and as all other students of his can agree, Mr. Newman definitely gave all he had to every student every day. He will truly be missed. What an exceptional human being! He will be sorely missed. Deborah and I were kids when we had the honor and privilege to study under this remarkable man. The League was saddened to hear about the loss of Jerry. He visited the League exhibtions on a regular basis and his presence at these events will be missed.
