Joe Mann Cheek

Joe Mann Cheek, a resident of Orange, died August 14, 2008, at the age of 51.

He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, November 26, 1956 to Robert and Bette Cheek. After graduating from Evadale High School he attended Lamar University where he earned a BA in Chemical Engineering. Joe was a long time member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Silsbee before moving to Orange. Since then he has been a faithful member of St. Paul's Church where he has been an active Lay Reader, Vestry member and has worked with the acolytes. Joe worked for Inland Orange and later Bayer-Lanxess.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and sportsman. His interest ranged from backpacking and hiking in the Tetons to scuba diving in Hawaii.

Joe served as Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 23 in Orange. He was happiest when working with the scouts. They gave him reason to fight his cancer.

Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Marie Sylvester and father, Robert Cheek. He is survived by his wife, Pam Cheek of Orange; sons, Nicholas Cheek and Christopher Cheek, both of Orange; mother, Bette Cheek of Evadale; brother, Robert Cheek and wife Tonya of Evadale; brother, Charles Cheek and wife Delores of Houston and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday August 17, 2008, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Reverend Bill Phillips of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Orange will serve as Celebrant and Reverend John Bedingfield of St. John's Episcopal Church in Silsbee will serve as Con-Celebrant.

Visitation will be at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange, Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

My family and I are very sorry for the loss of Mr. Cheek. I grew up across the street on International from this family and spent many days with this family.
