Kirk S. Brown

1952 ∼ 2013

A memorial service for Kirk Steven Brown, 61, of Beaumont will be held on Thursday, January 2, at 2:00 p.m. in the Claybar Kelley-Watkins Chapel with Dr. Jim Fuller officiating. A reception will follow in the family center of Calder Baptist Church, 1005 North 11th Street.

Kirk was born June 7, 1952 in Beaumont and died Tuesday, December 24th, 2013 in Beaumont after a short illness. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Sam and Melba Falcon and his father Zach Brown. He is survived by his mother Shirley Falcon Brown, his sister Lynne Brown and countless friends he would identify as his family.

Many people collect things but Kirk collected friends. Friendships he would begin at Edwards Elementary and maintain his whole life. He would create an extended family that will miss him like one of their own.

Kirk was a devoted family man. He had a special bond with his grandfather, Sam and spoke often about memories of him. Kirk was also close to his mother, this relationship was a friendship rooted in family and continued up to his death. Holidays were devoted to family. Aunts, Uncles and Cousins would gather and catch up. These gatherings would often take place at the beach cabin, an important place that Kirk and his family would share with many friends as well. Though Kirk had no children of his own, his friends were always happy to share theirs with him. He was a constant influence in their lives, even as they had children of their own, further expanding the children in his life.

At Austin Middle School, Kirk began what was thought to be a promising athletic career. He received the All District medal in Discus, the only for the schools Track Team. He further distinguished his public school career at French High School with the "Ugliest Man" Trophy.

Kirk began his affiliation with the Boy Scouts around the age of eleven, attending his first camp out and at least one of his fellow campers is a friend today. Boy Scouts continue to occupy Kirk's time through adulthood. Countless young boys were fortunate to have him as director of their summer camp, a job that continued several summers while he taught school.

The Church was an important part of his life. He forged countless relationships here as well as his spiritual life. Friends of North End Methodist Church will have great memories of Kirk's participation in a rendition of the Blues Brothers "Rawhide." Kirk's size and happy disposition made him a shoe in for Santa at church functions. He transformed many Christmases for Wesley Methodist children even though for his many young friends the gig was up when they recognized Uncle Kirk as jolly St. Nick. On a mission trip to Mexico, Santa's tears were evidence that he gained more from the experience then the children he surprised. So many of the youth of Wesley Methodist have only wonderful memories of Kirk as a mentor.

Kirk worked as a retail clerk at Gibson's, a tobacco salesman (a job he hated), an exterminator, and a steamship agent before finally finding his true calling as a teacher, graduating from Lamar University. Kirk taught at Price Elementary, Eugene Fields and was presently teaching at Dishman Elementary School- where he taught since the school was first opened. His students found a patient educator and a friend for life. Many students continued to keep Kirk appraised of their milestones, which made Kirk proud, and they are much richer for having known him. Kirk's fellow teachers found a tireless professional and friend they could count on. Kirk was active in the ATPE and held numerous offices on the local and regional level and was on the Board of Directors from 2007- 2011. Kirk never shied away from an issue, addressing them professionally and often humorously. In 2011, he gave the nominating speech for a friend running for State Secretary. Though public speaking was hard for Kirk, a friend needing a favor was more important than his fear.

His final lesson to all of us, in his full life cut short, is the true value of new and old friends, "one is silver and the other gold." His extended family of friends is too many to count among his survivors but this wonderful man was a friend when anyone needed one. It is hard to imagine a world without Kirk Brown and it is no coincidence that Kirk's home is filled with hundreds of model giraffes, the land animal with the largest heart. “One lives in hopes of becoming a memory.”

In lieu of flowers, friends may direct memorial contributions to the Kirk Brown Memorial Fund, Dishman Elementary School, 3475 Champions Drive, Beaumont, TX 77707 or to the Humane Society of Southeast Texas, 2050 Spindletop Ave, Beaumont, TX 77705.

Kirk was such an inspiration to me at Bingman Elementary where I was a first year school nurse. He always had a smile and a jovial word to say. I am so sorry to hear about his passing but Kirk will live on in my memory and heart as he will for everyone who was touched by his gentle and caring spirit. May he rest in peace.

Though I have not seen Kirk in many years, I will always remember our wonderful, sweet neighbor when I was growing up. He had a cat named, Fletcher, and he would let me come over to the house just to see Fletcher. I have fond memories of him taking a trip to Colorado with my family and I, and I can never remember seeing Kirk in a bad mood. He was always smiling. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to all the kids he was teaching. The world lost a great man. Rest in peace, Kirk.

Kirk was a fun, jolly friend who brought laughter, joy, and wit to every relationship and situation. He blessed me as a friend in Boy Scout Troop 65, member of North End Methodist Church, and groomsman in Sharon's and my wedding 39 years ago. Who can ever forget Kirk's and John Everitt's singing, dancing, and tossing canes to one another in performing "All for the Best" in Godspell in the old North End Fellowship Hall? Though we have not seen Kirk for a long time, Sharon and I thank God for beautiful memories of our friend, his calling in teaching children, his sweet spirit, and love for life. With ears of faith Kirk heard his Lord say early on Christmas Eve morning, "Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Master." And he did. Mike & Sharon Dent, Denver, CO

Kirk and I first met in 1977 where we worked for Bill Clark. He mentored me as this was my first job out of college. He also became a lifelong friend to me and all my family. He brought me into his family as well. Shirley, thank you for Kirk. He was always there for me through thick and thin. For that I am eternally grateful to you old friend. Rest peacefully with your lord and savior. You will be missed.

I was blessed to have Kirk as my Youth Director at Wesley UMC throughout junior high and high school. I truly believe the Lord placed me, Ben and Betsy in Kirk's path for not only the fun and laughter, but also for the father figure who loved us unconditionally. He filled this extremely shy young girl with words of encouragement and confidence on a daily basis. I know he loved that I worked as a non-nonsense ER nurse! He provided so many wonderful memories, from setting out luminaries on Christmas Eve to delivering Valentine's Day flowers to very memorable lock-ins! Most of all though, I remember all of the trips to Crystal Beach and Galveston. There was never a dull moment! His love and generosity was amazing. I was elected to Winterball Court as a freshman. The dress I wanted was beeautiful and more than Mom could afford. However, the dress appeared at my house one day. Years later I learned that Kirk bought that beautiful dress for me. I could go on and on of the great memories I have of Kirk. My most precious thing I will carry though is the love in my heart that is Kirk Brown. Thank you Kirk, for giving me, Ben and Betsy the love a father would give to his own children and showing us what a true Man of God is. Forever in our hearts, Amy (Heacker) Morse

I meet Kirk many years ago in high school and also at North End Methodist Church. He came into my life again through teaching and ATPE. We had many "interesting" trips to attend teacher events in Austin. Kirk dressed as a wizard. pirate, and sheriff at ATPE Convention - he would do anything to help a friend. Kirk was the one who made these trips interesting and light hearted. He was always there with a positive and upbeat attitude. He was also someone who "saw it like it was" and was able to convey that in an "appropriate manner". He was respected among his colleges, coworkers, friends, students, and parents. I will miss him saying "take care my friend" and those phone conversations that would go on and on. I loved looking for unusual giraffes to add to his collection. We had a group of ATPE friends who would get together (not often enough) to eat supper and I loved surprising him with "new" giraffes and catching up on some great story he had to tell. I feel like I know/knew his grandparents/family, friends on Galveston Street, family beach trips, Edwards Elem to French High, Boy Scouts and Camp Years, Youth Director Years, Trips to Colorado, Airplane Trips using his sister's Free miles, Bingman, Eugene Field, Price, and Dishman families and his years at Lamar. Kirk loved life and all those he meet. All of his friends knew each other even if we only meet in passing. Kirk introduced us all to each other in his memories and stories (his family, friends, and memories). So I will end this with TAKE CARE MY DEAR FRIEND until we meet again.

Our heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. Brown and Lynne. Kirk was our neighbor for 9 years and he was the best neighbor we have ever had. Kirk played Santa Claus so we could video tape him and then show our girls we had caught Santa putting out presents. We took a trip together to Colorado. He even helped us move to our current house. We have so many memories of Kirk. We shared many meals together and there were not too many days during those 9 years we did not see him. But when we think of Kirk, we will remember his big heart and his laughter. Kirk was always in a good mood. We know he touched many people's lives as he did ours. Rest in peace, Kirk, we will never forget you. John and Priscilla Venza

Kirk lived down the street from my family (Galveston St.) in Beaumont, Texas and was a very good friend of mine and my sisters. We had the best of times playing with him and at another of his neighbors, the Bakers. I will always remember Kirk's smile and the fun times we had playing and growing up thru our school years. My condolences to his family and may God forever Bless him!!! Patti Randall - Schneider

Mr. Brown was an amazing man and a wonderful mentor for his students. I had the honor of teaching the D.A.R.E. Program in his classroom at Dishman Elementary for several years. I was touched by his care, patience and leadership for his students. I know that the children are better for it. You truly made a difference Mr. Brown. Respectfully, Officer Crystal Holmes

Mr. Brown was my fifth grade teacher. He used to hand out these cards for good behavior and good grades- they were called I.C.M.M. Cards (I can manage myself). They let you get up and leave the class to use the bathroom or get a drink of water without explicit permission- you just held up the card and after Mr. Brown nodded at you, you just left. That really made an impact on me, because I had several teachers up to that point who cared about my education, one or two who I would say cared about me personally, but I never had one who trusted me. I'll always remember Mr. Brown as the teacher who trusted me to be responsible. At that stage of my life, that meant the world. What a phenomenal teacher and human being. Later in my life, when I became a teacher, I tried my best to trust my students to be responsible- and not to hold their hand through all of their tasks.

I am sorry to be out of town on Jan 2nd and unable to pay my respects to Kirk. I never worked directly with him but ran into him many times as I visited the school libraries. Always witty, always smiling, always wise and even-tempered and always--because of that--commanding my respect, Kirk was someone I was always glad to see. How many people can we say that about? He will be missed but we will see him again one day.

Kirk was one of the most patient people I have ever met. He help my son while he was going to school at Dishman. The children were so blessed to have him as their Teacher, the way he lived his life was an example to all . His love and joy in life transferred to the kids. He will be missed by so many friends. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I was so lucky to have Kirk as my youth director at Wesley United Methodist Church. I treasure memories of Kirk as Santa, and as The Sky at a Halloween carnival. He was the best chaperone on many fun trips. Most of all, I'll remember Kirk's smile, his laugh, and his way of making everything fun. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, co-workers, and students.
Janet Ham December 28, 2013
I was blessed to have taught school with Kirk at Eugene Field, and also to move on to Dishman Elementary with him. I always knew there would be a smile to share, and an uplifting "hello" when we saw each other at school. What a great friend to all, and a caring teacher for hundreds of students. His family, and his multitude of friends are in my prayers.

The world lost a good one with Mr. Brown's passing. He was a great teacher and just a caring soul. He will always hold a special place in my heart because he was a teacher who really understood my son, Daniel, and he fostered a love of learning by his teaching approach. My heart goes out to his remaining family and to his school family which I feel so blessed to have been a part. He will be sorely missed.

Kirk and I were sea scouts together in high school. I remember the time he and I and a couple of others were returning from a weekend at Lake Rayburn and his car broke down. We called his dad to rescue us, and didn't even know how to describe where we were. When he finally found us, we were in Evadale (about 5 miles north of Beaumont.). I think the others on this trip were Terry Ogden, john-Earl Smithey, Roger Douglas and Ken Hobbs.
