Lacey J. "Curley" McCarey, also known as "Poppa", 92, of Orange, Texas, died on Thursday, August 14, 2008.
Visitation will be on Saturday, August 16, from
5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
The funeral will be on Sunday, August 17, at 2 p.m. at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. The Reverend Don Sheffield, of the Union Baptist Church, Florien, LA., will officiate. Cremation to follow.
Born in Murphysboro, IL, on May 24, 1916, to Lacey and Helen McCarey. He was very close to his step-father Donald Shattuck.
Curley was a resident of Orange since 1978. He was partially raised in East Texas near Ranger, working in the oil fields in that area. He entered the Navy in 1944 serving in WWII from San Diego, CA as Seaman 1st Class. He worked for different oil field companies and retired as General Superintendent for the Fluor Corp. of Houston after 38 years.
He traveled all over the United States and Canada with his wife and 2 sons, and horses, and later traveled to Saudi Arabia with his wife, for the Fluor Corp.
He leaves his wife Shirley of 60 years; sons Michael of Camarillo, CA, Patrick of Orange; and daughter, Judi White of Tempe, AZ from a previous marriage, Debbie and Terri, daughters-in-law, three granddaughters, Dusti McCarey Burcham and Jenna McCarey of Orange, and Jenesee Johnson of CA, three grandsons, Michael Tanner McCarey of Camarillo, CA, Paul White, Jr. of San Diego CA, and Sean White of Tempe, AZ; sister, Wanda DuBois of Albuquerque, NM; two nephews, Frank A. DuBois of Corona, NM and John DuBois of Albuquerque, NM, niece, Fara Green of El Paso, TX; Chloe Taylor White, great grandchild, and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Mr. McCarey was a cowboy, working on ranches as a boy and later in life, roped calves, bulldogged and team roped in rodeos. He celebrated 60 years as a 32nd degree Mason, his lodge being Madison Lodge # 126 of Orange, TX. His Blue Lodge was in Trona, CA, and Scottish Rite in Lawrence, KS. He worked for DuPont in Baton Rouge, LA before retiring after 38 years, from the Fluor Corp. of Houston. He was also a member of the Ironworkers Local #136, for 66 years.
