LaVerne Nelson Smelker

LaVerne Nelson Smelker, 93, of Beaumont passed away July 15, 2007.

Graveside services will be at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at Magnolia Cemetery. Her family will receive guests from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smelker was born August 4, 1913, in Chicago, IL to Anders and Vera Eklund Nelson. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School, attended UCLA and graduated from Principia College in Elsah, IL. On September 1, 1937 she married the love of her life, Charles Thomas Smelker in Beverly Hills, CA. LaVerne is a past member of The Junior League of Beaumont, Chapter CC, P.E.O. and First Church of Christ, Scientist in Beaumont.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Irwin Nelson, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Nelson and Mary Smelker of Galveston; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and George Schaumburg, Jr. of Beaumont; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

What a wonderful legacy Laverne has left to all of us. She was one of the first people John and I met when we came to Beaumont. Gracious, and well loved by all. She is an inspiration.
