Lee Roy Garrett, Jr.

1947 ∼ 2025

Lee Roy Garrett, Jr.

Lee Roy Garrett, Jr., 78, was born on January 8, 1947, in Beaumont, Texas. He peacefully passed away on November 11, 2025, in Beaumont.

Memorial services for Lee Roy will be held at a later date to allow time for family to return from the mission field in Africa.

Lee Roy grew up in a family deeply rooted in sports, with his father being a professional baseball player and professional golfer. This early influence led him to start golf at age 3, then play on the golf teams at Lamar HS in Houston and the University of Houston. At U of H, he was a member of several student organizations including Pi Kappa Alpha. After college, he worked alongside his father as a golf professional during the 1960s and 1970s in Houston, Texas. In the late 1970s, he transitioned to a successful career in insurance sales after relocating to Beaumont.

A devoted deacon of the First Baptist Church of Beaumont for over 40 years, Lee Roy spent much of his time teaching Sunday School and engaging actively with the youth group, making a lasting impact on the lives of many young people in the community. At the heart of his family was the deep Christian faith he cultivated, helping each member grow spiritually and inspiring them to share God's love generously.

Outside of his professional and church commitments, Lee Roy had a passion for the great outdoors and humor. He enjoyed telling stories, camping and motorcycle riding, but golf remained his primary love. His fascination for American and Texas history always opened the door for interesting conversations, led partly from his ancestry to Daniel Boone and partly from the number of his close friends who sacrificed their lives in the US military. He loved all kinds of classic rock 'n' roll and outlaw country music, so much so that his music tastes will resonate with the Garrett family for years to come. Another great memory will be all the woodworking projects he enjoyed creating and will be passed down for generations.

Lee Roy leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Garrett; his son, Jay Garrett; his daughter, Jennifer Salyer and her husband, Brad; and his sister, Margo Frederking. The joy of his life also came from his grandchildren—Cal Garrett and his wife, Emily, Camp Garrett, Kanon Salyer and his wife, Tiffani, Gunnar Salyer and his wife, Heidi, along with Magnum, Remington, Colt, Warrior, Bianca, and Thunder Salyer. He was also a proud grandfather to great-grandchildren James Garrett, Benjamin Garrett, Rejoice Salyer, and Rosewood Salyer.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy Sr and Lorrene Fleming Garrett, and his sister, Diane Davis.

Sue and I met Lee Roy and Suzanne when we were newlyweds. He was a neighbor at first, and then became a friend, and sometimes a mentor as he was a Father of young children a little ahead of us. Being close to him in back then gave me insight to what most people know of him, he loved being a husband, a father, golf, Kaiser, and Jake. Our lives were not as close in his later years yet I find it easy to know so much about his character as a man, by relying on “Mathew 7:16”.” You will judge them by the fruits they bear, not by words”. Look only to his children and how they have blossomed into Adults is to know his character. He will be missed. Johnny & Sue Haskett

I was a fraternity brother and friend of Lee Roy's at UH. We were partners in the all school best ball tournament in 1968 which we almost won because of Lee Roy's great play that day. Hal Underwood and Bob Barbarossa, both All Americans at Houston were friends of his and followed us in the cart that day, an intimidating audience to say the least! I move back to Michigan a few years later and haven't seen Lee Roy since 1969, although we talked on the phone a couple of times. My deepest sympathies to the family. Its sounds like he had a great life!

We are saddened to hear of Lee Roy’s passing but confident and thankful for the assurance that he is with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. I remember days at FBC Beaumont as a child, Mr. Garrett was always friendly…always smiling…always positive! His smile lit up the room and you just knew he loved the Lord. I was grateful to have known him. May comfort and peace in the days ahead sustain you all. Know that you all are loved!

My heart breaks reading this. We met through our love of Jeeps at a local get-together years ago. He never failed to spot me or let me know he'd seen us driving around. I loved following his adventures through Facebook. You are all in my prayers.
