Mary J Smith

Mary J. Smith, 69, of Lumberton, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was born on May 23, 1939 to Theron and Louise Sturrock in Jasper. She was raised in Newton and graduated from Newton High School. Mary retired from the Department of Human Resources for the State of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, W.E. Davison and Emma Davison; and son-in-law Robert "Bubba" Delatte.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Thomas Smith of Lumberton; son, Rick Marshall of Newton; daughters, Robin Melancon and her husband, Bobby, of Baton Rouge, LA and Rhonda Delatte of Newton; brothers, Tommy Sturrock and Jesse Hartley; stepsons, Carl Jr., Phillip, and Terry Smith; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Remembered for her loving spirit and generosity, Mary will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 19th in the Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Newton County Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be Monday, May 18th from 5-8:00 p.m. at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home in Beaumont.

I will always remember Mary Jay as someone that ran to me and hugged me as hard as she could and then rushed me to the kitchen to feed me, no matter if I had just eaten!
