Mary Louise Smith Mathis, 95, of Beaumont, Texas, passed away on March 28, 2022, at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Beaumont. Burial will follow at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Beaumont.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 8, 2022, at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home in Beaumont.

Mary Louise was a Louisiana native and the older of four children. She was born to the late Lorenza and Leon “Pop” Duffy. Mary Louise was known for her kindness, love for her family, and her good cooking. She fed everyone who came to her house. Mary Louise loved cookouts and zydeco festivals. She was the zydeco queen of her family. May Louise raised her siblings after her mother passed away. Her brothers and sister were Wilson Duffy (Mary), Willis Duffy (Audrey), and Mary Lois Harrell (Otis).

Mary Louise and Wilson Joe married in 1945 and lived in Lafayette, Louisiana. They had three children, Warren Joe, Loreza Joe, and Mary Lee. Mary Louise (Mother and Grandmother) moved to Houston and raised her children. Then she moved to Los Angeles and married Elroy Mathis (Granddad). Later on in her life she moved to Beaumont, Texas to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She raised her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and took care of family members as a caregiver. She was so humble, kind, and loving. She took care of everyone is her family.

Mary Louise is preceded in death by her mother and father, Lorenza and Leon “Pop” Duffy; her brothers, Wilson Duffy and Willis Duffy; her beloved son, Warren Joe; husbands. Wilson Joe and Elroy Mathis; and her grandson, Elzima Hines; and her great-grandson, Elzima Hines Jr. Those left to mourn are her children and grandchildren.

Mary Louise is survived by her son, Warren Joe’s wife, Dyane; his significant other, Della Smith; his children, Warren “BJ” Joe of Queen Creek, Arizona, Amber Butts (Saunte) of Corona, California, and Greer Brown of Houston; his grandchildren, Daniel Brown, Samuel Brown, Brandon Joe, Kyra Joe, Shyla Joe, Meilani Butts, Saunte Butts Jr., and Sanai Butts; his great-grandchild, Athina Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

She is also survived by her daughter, Lorenza Joe Hines (Donald); Lorenza’s daughter, Dawnita Hines of Allen, Texas; her grandchildren, Christopher Ellison (Qadirah) and Damarco Perkins; great-grandchildren, Imani and Cali Ellison. Lorenza’s daughter, Mary Hines of Beaumont, and grandson, Devin Malone. Lorenza’s son, Raymond Hines of Houston, and grandchildren, Raymani. Lorenza’s late son Elzima’s children, Darlene Bass and Deshanie Burce; great-grandchildren, Karsyn Murphy, Kennadi Bass, Querron Davis, Querra Davis, Duerron Davis. Lorenza’s daughter, Angela Hines; grandchildren, Dashia Branch, Maurice James, and Rayshawn Toran; and great-grandchildren, Dalyn Jones and Dayleigh Jones.

Mary Louise is also survived by her daughter, Mary Lee Moore (Lonnie) of McKinney, Texas; Mary Lee’s son, Lonnie E. Moore III (Angela), her grandchildren, Lonnie E. Moore IV (Madysen), Aaomni Moore, Lawrence Moore, Landon Moore, Mia Moore, and Mariah Robertson Moore. Mary Lee and family loved Mother unconditionally. They all loved her with their entire hearts and will miss her forever.

Serving as pallbearers will be Raymond Hines, Christopher Ellison, Marcus Daigle, Lawrence Moore, “BJ” Brandon Joe, Landon Moore, Damarco Perkins, Devin Malone, Maurice James, Mark Harrell, and Tommy Johnson Jr.

Honorary pallbearers are Lonnie Moore III, Lonnie Moore IV, Rodney Isles, Tony Duffy, Clayton Daigle Sr., Daniel Duffy, Marty Collins, Craig Harrell, and Saunte Butts.

The Mathis Family would like to thanks the numerous acts of kindness bestowed upon our beloved Mother. They would also like to extend sincere gratitude and appreciation to Compassion Care; Dr. Rawan Musa; nursing staff, Susan and Marla; and family and friends, Genevieve Bremby, Dorothy Daigle, and Clayton Daigle Sr.
