Merlin P. Breaux

Merlin P. Breaux, 77, was born in Edgerly, Louisiana, January 15, 1932. He moved to Texas at the age of 13 and graduated from South Park High School in 1950. He entered Lamar in 1950 and was a starting defensive guard for the Cardinals in 1950 and 1951. Merlin served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1953. He re-entered Lamar in 1953 and graduated with a BS in 1958. While he was a student, he began working in the petroleum, industry was a refinery laborer at Pure Oil.

After graduation he rose steadily with the Gulf Oil Corporation from Industrial Relations Assistant to Corporate Vice President. In 1985 he was asked to join President Ronald Reagan as Special Assistant to the President for Public Liaison. His many accomplishments are too numerous to list. He as a hard working honorable man. His greatest accomplishment was being ordained a Baptist minister.

He was the child of Iowa and Alice Breaux and brother of L. J. Breaux and Kay West. His parents and son, James A. Breaux predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margie; son, Wayne and wife, Fay; daughter, Charlotte Brown and husband, Gene; son, Richard and wife, Diane; daughter, Camille Hasbrouck and husband, Tom; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held on Monday evening, July 27th from 5-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the funeral service at the Breaux Family Cemetery in Sour Lake.

I am greatly saddened by the death of Merlin Breaux. He was very helpful and supportive over the years and I will never forget him.
