Morton A Curtice

1938 ∼ 2013

Morton Curtice was born in Port Arthur, Texas to Morton Augusta Curtice and Sadie Curtice on December 29, 1938. He spent most of his childhood life in Port Arthur and Nederland. After graduating from Bishop Byrne High School in 1958, Morton soon met Mary Katherine Palique and they were married in 1959. He started his career as a barber at Village Barber Shop and soon became recognized as a prestigious Hairstylist. In 1976 he established Curtice & Company that became a very popular, well-recognized barber shop in Beaumont (customers called him Curtice). Curtice was proud of his Flat-Tops and would comment that if I can’t land a plane on it, it’s not a good haircut.

Curtice served the Beaumont community by participating in the National Guard, YMBL, and Knights of Columbus #951. He would provide free haircuts to the elderly, children’s first haircut, high school football players and to customers in the hospital.

Curtice enjoyed people and was extremely happy at his 50th Wedding Anniversary party and at his Retirement party where many customers paid tribute to him. At work, he excelled at making his customers feel comfortable in the chair and at home he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

The family would like to thank all customers for their patronage throughout the years, where they were more than customers to Curtice, they were friends.

Curtice, 74, went home to Jesus after a long fight with congestive heart failure. He is survived by his wife Katherine Curtice, sons Dewayne and Steven Curtice, 4 grandchildren Lacy McDonald, Grayson Hogue, Tyler and Elizabeth Curtice. He was preceded in death by his mother, brother, Charles Curtice and daughter, Liz Curtice Hogue.

Serving as pallbearers will be: J. K. Petterway, Gene Bougeois, Larry Nunez, Harold Norris, William Oglesbee and Tom Raborn.

A rosary will be recited Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. with a visitation to follow until 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Morton Curtice will be Monday, December 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Curtice was my friend and barber. He will be greatly missed. Once I made Curtice a gift of a barber pole. He made me feel like I was getting the gift, with his enthusiasm and excitement. Curtis really made us all feel like he appreciated our business. He was my best barber ever! Sometimes other customers and I would stay after our haircuts were over just to talk with Curtice. He used to talk about having a small shop here or at beach with a wood stove, checker boards, etc. as a place for all of us to hang out. I so wish that could have happened. I will miss him.

Katherine, I have prayed for God to hold you in the palm of his hand during your time of sorrow and grief. Curtice was a wonderful gentleman with a passion for life. Many years ago he cut my hair. One day, he said, Sandy Gail, come here. This is the last time I am going to cut this long mop of hair, from now on, you have to cut it. I am through messing with it. I can still see him looking at me over the top of his glasses. Shortly after he got his " Red Mustang " running, it was "Hot August Nights ". Some of the Mustang Club members were cruising., so Curtice said, It's time I take my maiden voyage down 1th street. He said, Vixen, ( his pet name for me ) you all hop in and let's go. I was in the back seat and Rodney in the front. Half way down 11th street, the car started having trouble. He was just flabbergasted. I believe the tire was loose . He was so proud of that car. Curtice touched the lives of many and he will dwell in the hearts of those forevermore. May God Be with you and keep you. With much love, Brenda Davis

I signed the guest book from the Beaumont Enterprise .com and now here. When my father took me to the village for my first ever haircut. My view was Slim first chair, H. H. Thomas second, Curtice third, Heavy fourth and then on the end was Bertha Perkins. Also there was the bald headed black shoe sign man. Slim cut my hair that day and every time after that when the need arose, Curtice cut my hair up until the summer of 1971 and then me and my parents moved out of Beaumont. I can only surmise now that Jesus has no excuses of not getting a haircut because the best haircutter has arrived on the scene. May God Bless you the Curtice family and it is my prayer he will give you peace during this time in your lives. By the way can you imagine Jesus with a classic Curtice flat top. Randy T. Morgan

Curtice will be greatly missed by his family and friends like me. For the last fifteen years, I have had the prividge to call him my friend. You learn a lot about a man when you spend hours and hours in his barberchair. Here are only three of the things I learned in that time.He was a man of faith deeply committed to his church and Godly conservative values that have made our country great. He was also greatly concerned about the moral direction of our nation and did not hesitate to voice his convictions. He was a family man who cherished his family and was faithfully commited to them in our conversations. All of us as his regulars mourned with him in the passing of his daughter a few years ago.In addition to his family we was a great admirer of Billy Graham and spoke often of what he had done for our country and our world.May God rest his soul, comfort his family and fill the huge hole left in all of our hearts with His comforting presents. And may God give our world many more men like Curtice. Dr. Montie L. Martin

Katherine and Family, Our hearts are so heavy as we grieve with you. We know that Sandy, Heather, and Sherry are devastated as well. Curtice was a one of a kind person who always had a smile on his face no matter what hardship he was facing. His friendship meant so much to us and we will always miss our wonderful friend. Curtice did not cut many women's hair, but I was lucky to be one of the ones he did. We are praying God will wrap you and all who loved this wonderful man in his loving arms and through his grace give you peace. God bless you! Our love to you all, Sam and Debbie Smith

Catherine, Dewayne & Steve: I was so sad to hear about Curtice. I will always have my great memories being neighbors for 45 years. Curtice is one of my favorite people, his red hair & freckles, his laugh, his jokes, and so much love to give. I have comfort in knowing that Liz met him at the gates. I will see you at the Rosary Sunday. But let me say thank you now for all the love and concern and unselfishness Catherine & Curtice shared with my mother and father all through the years. You are all in my prayers. With sympathy, Kathy Hoffpauir Bell

Curtis has cut my hair for many years and was a neighbor of mine before I moved to Kirbyville. I still came for him to cut my hair until he retired. I will miss him dearly and my thoughts and prayer are with the family. May God comfort you at this time of your loss.
