Nell McCormick

1917 ∼ 2017

Nell McCormick, 98 years of age, went to be with her Lord and her loved ones on January 26, 2018 at Calder Woods Assisted Living. She was born December 22, 1917 in Bude Mississippi to Fannie Mae and Floyd McManus. The family later moved to Beaumont and built one of the first homes on Lucas Drive.

Nell was a woman of faith who was an active member of Cathedral in the Pines for 67 years and later, a founding member of the Christian Fellowship Worship Center. Since the age of 17, she taught Sunday school for all ages from youth to senior adults. At the time of her "retirement" in her nineties due to failing eye sight, she was teaching a senior adult class. She also taught a community-wide Bible study group for 14 years.

Nell had a gift for hospitality having friends visit often over the years. One of her favorite things to do was having an annual sit down dinner party for 35 friends during each Christmas season. She also loved to travel having been to Asia and Europe, especially Germany, the birthplace of her mother-in-law and stay in the home where her mother-in-law was born.

Nell retired from the Beaumont Independent School District after many enjoyable years. She was the secretary to the principal at Marshall Middle School and later an assistant to the superintendent, Dr. Taylor. She was active in various educational associations having been a speaker at local, state, and national conferences.

Nell is survived by her "4 perfect children" as she would jokingly tell everyone, Jim (Carolyn) McCormick, Cypress, TX, Carolyn (Jim) Gautreaux, Beaumont,TX, Kay (Ron) Cherry, Frisco, TX, and Doug (Kim) McCormick, The Woodlands, TX. She is also survived by a sister, Janet (Al) Richardson, brother, Jay McManus of Wichita, KS., and sister-in-law, Jane Lindow.

She is survived by 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Nell is predeceased by her parents and husband of 67 years, Herbert McCormick, brothers, Doug McManus, James McManus, Rudy McManus, and sisters, Katherine Slade Lewis and Mildred Culp.

Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Claybar-Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home, 1155 N. 11th Street, Beaumont, TX 77702 with the funeral service immediately following at 11:00 AM in the chapel. Nell will be laid to rest between her husband and a brother at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Christian Fellowship Worship Center, 3950 Pointe Parkway, Beaumont, TX 77706.

There are no words to express the sadness I feel now for your loss.  When the pain of death becomes overwhelming, we can turn to God in prayer.  The Bible tells us to "throw all of your anxieties on him, because he cares for you," (1 Peter 5:7).  Take comfort in knowing that he loves you and that "one day he will wipe tears from our eyes, and that death will be no more,"(Isaiah 25:8). I hope this scripture gives you peace and endurance during this time of bereavement.

Nell was a very special Christian mentor, Sunday School tescher, and friend to us since we met her and Herb in 1977 at Cathedral in the Pines. Her kindness, sense of humor, upbeat positive attitude, and beautiful smile will be remembered always. We consider it a blessing to have worshipped with such a strong woman of faith. May God comfort you. Sincerely, Wayne and Laurie Thomas of her Christian Fellowship family
