Obituary
Richard Sawyer, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, in Beaumont, Texas. He was born on February 10, 1949, in Beaumont, Texas.
Richard proudly served his country as a Marine and a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, completing three tours of duty with Delta 1/7. He was a recipient of three Purple Hearts, a testament to his bravery and sacrifices. After his distinguished military service, Richard dedicated his professional life to his career as a welding inspector, retiring from API and AWS.
Beyond his professional life, Richard was an active member of his community, belonging to Masonic Lodge 889, VFW Post 1806, and the American Legion. He was an avid fisherman and found great joy in shooting pool, even winning tournaments in Las Vegas. Above all, Richard loved his family very much.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Cherie Sawyer; his sons, Walker Sawyer and David Sawyer and wife Melanie; and his daughters, Sunday Sawyer Juarez, Shelly McVey and husband Dan, and Kellie Lewis and husband David. Richard was a cherished grandfather to 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Patrice Mitchell; his best friend, Steven Stafford; his former spouse and longtime friend, Terry Sawyer; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, John Robert Sawyer and Susan Elizabeth Sawyer, and his extended family, Clarence Ray Lee and Mabel Estele Lee.
A visitation of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM with a Funeral service to follow. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held, Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at 10:45 at Houston National Cemetery 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr. Houston, TX 77038.
His legacy of service, dedication, and love for his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Shriners International.
