Robert H Taber

1964 ∼ 2014

Robert H. Taber of Port Arthur, TX died July 25, 2014 after a long 3 year battle with lung cancer. He was full of life and had a beautiful smile that warmed people’s hearts. He will be greatly missed.

Rob left the Army as a Staff Sergeant after serving 11 years. He is a veteran of the Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm of the Persian Gulf War serving as a cavalry scout in the 1st Squadron in the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division. Rob started his career in Germany, met his wife Wendi while serving at Fort Hood, served in Japan, and finished his distinguished career with medical supply at Fort Sam Houston.

After the Army, Rob earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He taught high school in the San Antonio ISD for 2 years before moving to pursue a passion for big trucks and buses. He drove for VIA in San Antonio and for Fort Sam Houston. Finally Rob had his dream job. He engineered a train at the San Antonio Zoo. He had the hat and everything!

Rob was born to Bruce and Betty Taber on October 14, 1964 in Lansing, Michigan. He grew up in Grand Haven, Michigan before moving to Florida with his family in 1982. He and Wendi moved from San Antonio to Port Arthur in 2012 to be closer to family during his fight.

He is a member of Central Baptist Church in Port Arthur, TX where he loved to listen to Brother Phil. He learned a lot from him and was glad they moved to Port Arthur. He loved living in this area.

His father Bruce Taber precedes Rob in death. His wife of 21 years, the former Wendi Jones of Port Neches, TX and their four-legged children – Dixie and Ruby – survive him. He is also survived by his mother, Betty Taber; sister, Laurie Donselar; brothers & sisters-in-law Rory & Laura Jones, Jon & Darla Jones, Chad & Teresa Shields and Chad & Tiffany Babineaux; mother-in-law Charlotte Jones and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held August 2, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, 4545 Hwy 73, Port Arthur, TX. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Relay for Life, Central Baptist Church.

Rob was one of my best friends from high school until the Lord took him home. His laugh was contagious and we enjoyed sharing our thoughts about hockey, model trains, and politics to name a few. While his life journey took him around the world and back, he always stayed connected to his friends in Grand Haven. I can recall the many 'snail mail' letter exchanges we made while he was stationed abroad, I was always excited to see a letter in the mail, usually with pictures from Rob someplace in the world protecting our freedom. We will miss a great husband, son, brother, friend, and patriot, but we should all remember how he touched our lives and made this world a better place. Love you and miss you Taber. Jeff Kurburski

My Buddy Tabe My first memory of Taber was in basic training. I was a young guy out of high school and was having a hard time. I was in the push up position and could not get up because I did not remember the words to tell the drill sergeant. The only one to walk in the room to help me was Taber and he gets into the push up position himself to help me with those magic words. Drill sergeant thank you for conditioning my mind body and soul please fill free to do so at any time private Martinez, and Taber request permission to recover. From that day forward I knew that he was a true friend. Basic was over and we both went our separate ways. Three weeks later when I got stationed in Germany to my surprise I see my Buddy Tabe. We both got stationed to the same troop and boy he took me under his wings and showed me a lot. I can keep going about this special Buddy but it hurts to continue. I will always have those memories of him. I just shared a few pictures of us from Germany I'm the one on the right of him next to the Xmas tree. Wendy Taber was a very special person to me and I know he was to you.Sorry for your loss. Remember we will see him again as he greets us at the front door. Love You Buddy. Truly Sorry for your loss Wendi. So very sorry. There has not been a day that has gone by that I have not thought about Rob. He always was such a character. Rob was so damn funny! I do not think that I have ever been around anyone that could just get me rolling. Man, did he love a good burger or a Philly Cheese Steak. Loved his Buccaneers! I will never forget them winning the Super Bowl and Rob doing a cart-wheel in the living room! His beloved Red Wings, man he tried to help learn about hockey. His love of a good beer, I will always cherish the many beers he and I downed in the garage and watching the Spurs win a couple of championships together (I still have the bag of beer caps he and I said we were going to save and see how many beers we could drink.) The infamous hole that popped up in the road and him laying in it and him and I laughing so damn hard. That will be what I will always remember the most, his quick wit and his laughing and his amazing ability to make other laugh! His smile. Miss ya Brother. Rest Easy and See you on the other side.

Dear Wendi and extended Jones family, Rob's passing is such a two-sided coin. On the one hand, I share your sorrow and grief as he leaves his earthly home and family behind......but.....on the other hand... I share in your great JOY as he enters his heavenly home and rejoices in his new healthy body, is surrounded by loved ones who have gone before him, and looks upon the face of Jesus! God loved him too much to leave him here for even one more day of pain and suffering. Praise be to God for His unspeakable mercy and love. Hallelujah! Carol Hebert
