Ward Blakely Nusom

1926 ∼ 2018

Ward Blakely Nusom at the age of 92, went home to be with his Lord on November 16, 2018 after struggling with pneumonia at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont, Texas.

Funeral services will be 10:00am, Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at Claybar Kelley-Watkins in Beaumont. Officiating Reverend Jim Salles of West End Baptist Church and Reverend Rodney Barnett of Urban Hearts Ministries. Burial will follow at Forrest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Beaumont.

Visitation will be from 5:30pm-7:00pm, Tuesday, November 20. 2018 at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home in Beaumont.

Ward is survived by his children Janis Kelly and husband Duane, George (Buddy) Nusom and wife, Kay, Peggy Fontenot and husband George and Judy Crocker.

He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ward is preceded in death by his father, George Sidney Nusom and mother Mildred Mary (Bootsie) Nusom, his wife, Essie Elizabeth Nusom, son, Glen Ward Nusom, grandsons Vance Watkins and Christopher Nusom, and great grand-daughter, Heather Bertrand.

Ward was born in Beaumont, Texas on September 2, 1926 to George Sidney Nusom and Mildred Mary (Bootsie) Blakely Nusom. He was married to Essie Elizabeth Dees, July 2, 1944 in Kountze, Hardin County, Texas.

He graduated from Beaumont High School before joining the Navy in WWII where he was part of the crews that transported our troops home at the end of the war. He was a Fireman Second Class and was honorably discharged March 25, 1946. From the age of 17, Ward worked a myriad of jobs with his dad and grandfather practicing their trade of masonry and carpentry until he went to work for Gulf States Utilities until he retired.

Ward made a profession of faith at the age of 6 years old. He was a member, deacon and a cornerstone for West End Baptist Church on Phelan Blvd. in Beaumont since 1967. He was also the beloved men’s Sunday School teacher and mentor.

Ward was a Master gardener and loved sharing his knowledge and bounty with everyone. He loved to talk to anyone and everyone about the Bible and his precious Lord. He was a good and faithful man.

For everyone that knew him and loved him, Ward will be sorely missed. As one of his great grandson’s said, “He was a great example of what a man should be and he will be greatly missed.”
